2012 Alzheimer’s Association: Walk To End Alzheimer’s
Many people fear the idea of growing older; the idea of gray hair, the concern of not being able to drive, and the loss of senses such as hearing or seeing. One of the most prominent fears that we have, however, is the loss of our memory. Most people with Alzheimer’s are over age 65, and your chance of developing the disease doubles every five years after that.
“We know that if you are 80 or older, your chances of getting Alzheimer’s are 50-50,” says Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, a research scientist with the Indiana University Center for Aging Research.
If you or someone you know has experienced caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, you probably have an idea of what it is like to see the progression of the disease. Dementia and Alzheimer’s have a slow but strong effect on the brain. Forgetfulness can range from forgetting to turn off the lights before leaving the house to forgetting one’s own name. It is a frustrating, scary and unforgiving disease, and the most frightening part is that it can occur in anyone’s mind; especially those who have a family history of Alzheimer’s.
At Oxnard Family Circle, we are dedicated to supporting and helping caregivers for Alzheimer’s and dementia individuals. We understand how stressful caregiving can be, and our goal is to provide respite for you during the day and high-quality care for your loved one. Just as you do, we strongly support research and efforts towards finding a cure for dementia and Alzheimer’s.
While Alzheimer’s can leave you or your family member feeling hopeless, you always have the opportunity to fight back and support research funding for a cure.
“The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s™ is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, this inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease, the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.”
Every year, the Alzheimer’s Association holds this fundraiser so that our communities can work together in raising money to help others. Oxnard Family Circle is proud to announce that we will be taking part in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in hopes to raise funds for research and further develop a cure for Alzheimer’s.
