Anita is 72 years old and lives with her daughter, who has a full-time job during the day. Anita’s daughter is concerned because her mother has dementia and is not able to moniter her own medication and is prone to wandering out of the house.
Anita also has difficulty showering by herself and will sometimes forget to eat if she is alone. While Anita’s daughter is uncomfortable with the idea of her mother living anywhere other than at home, she worries about Anita throughout the day and how secure she is.
Ralph is 60 years old and while he has no cognitive or serious physical issues, he is not adamant about monitoring his diabetes. He lives by himself and will often forget to check his blood sugar before and after meals or forget to take his insulin. His two children are worried about his health but work and go to school during the day, making it hard to check whether he is properly addressing his diabetes. They cannot afford to hire in-home care and their father insists that he will not live anywhere but his own house.
When recipients of in-home care (by hired caregivers or family members) need skilled senior care, one of the first options that caregivers go to is nursing home placement. They assume that their loved one may not be entirely safe at home by themselves and are namely looking for help from therapists, nurses, and doctors during the period of time that they cannot monitor their loved one personally. However, many people hold a negative connotation to the idea of nursing homes, making reciepents of the care wary of the idea of moving out of their comfort zones and having to adjust to a new atmosphere. Nursing home placement can also be expensive, which adds stress to the caregiver’s already difficult situation.
